Carroll Shelby, Builder of Cobra Sports Car, Dies at 89

FORM THE NEW YORK TIMES: Carroll Shelby, a Texas chicken farmer turned hot-rodder who went on to build innovative sports cars like the Cobra that challenged Europe’s longtime dominance of road racing, as well as high-performance versions of production cars like the Ford Mustang, died on Thursday in Dallas. He was 89.

His death was announced by his company, Carroll Shelby International.

In the 1960s, Shelby raised the profile of American racing machines on the international sports-car circuit by packing powerful Ford V8 engines into lightweight British roadsters, and by developing racing cars for Ford. MORE»

FROM USA TODAY: Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone has given organizers of next year’s U.S. Grand Prix another week to save the Texas race by proving they have the finances in place.

Ecclestone had wanted organizers to sign a contract by Wednesday, but extended his deadline to next Wednesday when the World Motor Sport Council will ratify the 2012 calendar.

“The deadline hasn’t been met, so we are still trying to make it happen,” Ecclestone said Wednesday. “They need to get some money and a pen … as soon as possible. They know full well. Deadlines are terrible things because people always go to the end of the deadline. But if it isn’t all signed before the World Motor Sport Council meeting, it can’t happen.” MORE»

It likely will be the world’s first condominium complex with elevators that will take residents directly to their units while they are sitting in their cars.

Porsche sells German castle

FROM THE AFP: German luxury sportscar maker Porsche is putting up for sale a Bavarian castle snapped up for six million euros ($8 million) in 2006, a spokesman for the manufacturer of the iconic 911 car said on Sunday.

“We are parting company with this estate,” the spokesman told the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung (FAS), after the paper said Porsche was selling Schloss Bullachberg, near the famous Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria.

Porsche had purchased the castle five years ago, under previous boss Wendelin Wiedeking, hoping to transform the 180,000-square-metre (1.9-million-square-feet), building into a luxury hotel. MORE»
