FROM NY TIMES: The Ford Motor Company is expected to tell dealers this fall that it is phasing out Mercury, a 71-year-old brand that will be down to just two models by next year.
Dealers have been told to expect an announcement about the brand’s future in October, and many think it will be a casualty of Ford’s strategy to focus on its core lineup of vehicles.
“It doesn’t seem like they need it,” Jeremy Anwyl, the chief executive of Edmunds.com, a Web site that gives car-buying information to consumers. “There might have been some value there decades ago, but certainly not much today.” MORE»
