In 1960 a 32 year old hot rodder drove a backyard built, quad Pontiac powered car to 406.60 mph on the legendary Bonneville Salt Flats. The shaky run propelled the young man, Mickey Thompson, into the spotlight as he became the first first American to break the 400mph barrier.
Unfortunately, it didn’t become an official record because he was unable to make the second run due mechanical problems. The speed authorities require a second run and take the average for the record books.
It didn’t matter though, Mickey’s knack for self promotion was enough to slingshot him into successful and rich professional motorsport career. This Good Year promotional film, “fastest man on wheels”, provides excellent insight and captures the drama of his attempt.
