Watching this period video footage of the 1960 Indianapolis 500 really puts into perspective how much racing has evolved over the years. It’s racing in a pure and simple form, it’s damn enjoyable.
Part 1 – A dramatic introduction and behind the scenes look of the ’60 500. Record breaking qualifying runs are also shown. Did he just say that driver was a dish washer?
Part 2 – The main event, racing and some mishaps are shown. Jim Rathmann, a builder of go-karts and speed shop owner, takes the checkered flag in 3 hours and 36 minutes with an average speed over 138mph.
Oh, check out the guy waving the flags on the track, he’s certified crazy.

The crowds certainly don’t look like that anymore, I went a few years ago and it was jam packed with rednecks
Nice vintage video. That era is long gone, a freakin go kart builder won!
