V-6 Camaro may represent GM Performance Future

Mr. Lutz

One our favorite guys in the automotive industry, Bob Lutz, has hinted that the V-6 powered Camaro represents the future of performance at General Motors.  A V6, Aye?  Sounds a bit wacky coming from a company that sells a 638 hp V8 Blue Devil.

camaro-ssBut, let’s be honest, the General is engineering fantastic 4 and 6 bangers today.  The base Camaro’s LLT 3.6L V-6 is a high-tech, high-output engine that’s chock full o’technology. In addition to direct injection, advanced features of the engine include variable valve timing, roller chain cam drive, forged steel crank and connecting rods and piston cooling jets for lower temperature and increased durability.  It generates 304 HP (227 kW) and 273 lb-ft (370 Nm) of torque and should be strong enough to withstand power-enhancing modifications. Not bad. Keep in mind a 2010 Mustang GT is pushing out 312 hp with a 4.6-liter, 24-valve V-8.  Click on the photo below to see a full rendering of the LLT.

This is the GM's future, gaze into it.

After all that has been said and done, I’d still rather have a V8.  But, I certainly find the V-6 interesting.
